    Description

Resource efficiency has become the main sustainability related topics both at the micro and macro level. In order to measure the resource use and the improvements resulting from resource efficiency initiatives, it is essential to provide solid indicators which go beyond the simple efficiency principle and include the concept of ecological compatibility. In this presentation, a set of selected resource efficiency indicators is presented with the aim to include, firstly, the concept of a circular economy consisting of manufacturers, recycling and waste disposal companies, and, secondly to build a linkage between the efficiency principle and the principal of ecological compatibility. Therefore, the suggested indicator set focuses on a differentiation between technospheric and ecospheric resource inputs, the inclusion of reducts and non-product output as well as the consideration of environmentally compatible output. In order to ensure the connectivity from the micro-indicators to the macro level and to include a life-cycle perspective of indicators so-called raw material equivalents must be included.
