How short tandem repeats influence human meiotic recombination

Description

In this work we analyzed the transmission of STRs and their influence on meiotic recombination in human sperm. Therefore, we collected large numbers of both crossover products by pooled sperm typing in several donors for a well-characterized recombination hotspot on chromosome 16. So far we have data, that two STRs within this hotspot, showing length polymorphisms (an A6/A7 and an A9/A19 STR), lead to very different patterns including insertion-biased gene conversion, crossover refraction and shifts in hotspot centers. Donors with an A9/A19 STRs additionally show a reduced recombination rate compared with the homozygous 19A donor group. We have shown how these STRs influence recombination in a very diverse manner, depending on the type and location of the STR.
