    Two most enduring concepts from the telephony era are the handset, still being the preeminent design for phones, and the continuous connection. Despite the introduction of datagrams we have systems that tacitly assume uninterrupted connectivity among all communicating parties. The voluminous research on ad hoc networks treated mobility and churn as exceptional cases, as problems to be overcome. We have taken another view and have for a decade been studying intermittent communication among mobile devices at the fringe of wireless networking. I will give a personal view on research opportunities for opportunistic delay-tolerant communication, and present our system design and evaluation. I will also describe the need for better mobility models since data is being transported by the movements of users and will briefly present our approach and results. I will also discuss remaining hurdles in system design to make direct communication between mobile devices possible and efficient.
