Fostering AI Literacy through Participation and Creative Interventions

Activity: Talk or presentationInvited talkscience-to-public

Description

Although Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become increasingly visible, many people still struggle to make sense of what it is, where they encounter it in daily life, and how to engage with it critically. This lack of AI literacy can widen existing gaps in digital participation and fuel fears. To address this, we initiated “How to Explain AI”, a participatory project bringing together a diverse group of citizens to explore their most pressing questions about AI and co-create accessible and creative methods to communicate AI concepts. The collaboration led to the development of songs about AI, which were shared in interactive public events, inviting visitors to listen, discuss, and reflect on their own encounters with AI. Follow-up studies and experiences in the field showed that such low-threshold, creative, and participatory approaches can help foster AI literacy and inclusion, reduce anxieties, and cultivate a more grounded understanding of AI in everyday life.
