Flow visualization and data analysis in multiphase fluid mechanics

Activity: Talk or presentationOther talk or presentationscience-to-public

Description

Measurements in multiphase flows of liquids, gases and solid particles are challenging due to limited optical access and possibly strong interaction of the involved phases. However, experimental fluid mechanics in multiphase flows underwent a rapid development during the last decades driven by digital camera technology, the adoption of lasers for illumination and the increase of computational power for fast image processing of large datasets. During the presentation we will discuss the difficulties of measurements in various types of multiphase flows, see that we can do high-quality measurements not only in the lab but also in real industrial plants and learn how signal processing and machine learning techniques can help to extract the information we need to validate numerical data and better understand multiphase fluid mechanics.
