First Experiences with Abaqus Knee Simulation – Potentials for Future Developments

Activity: Talk or presentationInvited talkscience-to-science

Description

A constant increase in human life expectancy, caused by the most modern achievements in the field of medicine and medical engineering, ensure that orthopedic interventions for pain relief are becoming increasingly important. In the case of a total knee arthroplasty (TKA) the femoral and tibial knee components will be replaced by implants. Where the femoral part and tibia tray is made out of steel whereas for the tibia insert usually UHMWPE is the material of choice. Numerical methods are predestinated to investigate the complex interactions in the case of a TKA. Therefore, the Abaqus Knee Simulator provides a digital environment to model and analyze these relations. In this presentation a workflow and first results will be presented. Furthermore, the knee simulation can be extended from the simulation of artificial endoprostheses towards the simulation of bone-cartilage-tendon system in living environment. Tissue engineering offers a high potential to realize such components and proper simulations could significantly support the development of these systems. Finally, the definition of an integrated biomaterial computational engineering framework will shortly be discussed in our presentation.
