Activity: Talk or presentation › Invited talk › science-to-science
Description
Abstract: Now in my second semester teaching the Advanced Language Awareness course within an MA Teacher Education programme, I have been reflecting on the connections between language awareness (LA) and affect. This talk presents a personal and professional exploration of how these two domains intersect, offering insights for teacher educators, trainee English language teachers, and those curious about the role of emotions in language awareness. The talk will begin by contextualizing LA within the broader framework of teacher language awareness, highlighting its significance in shaping pedagogical decisions. I will then define affect, considering the emotional and psychological factors that influence language use and learning in multilingual classrooms. From there, I will share key reflections on how affective dimensions interact with teachers’ language awareness, shaping their perceptions and instructional choices. Finally, I will outline how these insights are shaping my approach to teacher education and propose ways in which affect and LA could be further integrated into teacher training programmes. This session invites dialogue on the emotional underpinnings of language awareness and the implications for fostering reflective, affect-sensitive teaching practices.
