The word 'silence' has many meanings: the perceptible unspoken, oppressive, erased, unheard, unspeakable, the non-articulable. Silence signifies the establishment of norms that stand only for a specific (white) culture and tradition and an explicit habitus; for just one way of acting and being. Decolonizing describes an act of uncovering other forms of knowledge and giving them a platform, as a way of challenging the current structures of oppression. Finding one's voice is the first right step towards decolonization and regaining one's authority and presence in a world structured by racism (white norms), Cissexism and Ableism, to name just a few structures of oppression.
