Dielectrophoretic Particle-Transport in Alternating-Current Electro-Osmotic Micropumps

Activity: Talk or presentationContributed talkunknown

Description

Our investigations concern the electro-kinetic flow in microfluidic channels realized in SU-8/glass technology, which is induced by alternating-current electro-osmosis (ACEO) above the stepped electrode array on the channel bottom. The resulting flow was measured optically by evaluating the dynamics of dielectrophoretic micro-particles and simulated numerically by using finite elements, where good qualitative and quantitative agreement was found. The microfluidic simulation offers a good understanding of the particle-dynamics, which is based on an interplay of viscous drag, dielectrophoretic, gravitational and buoyancy forces. The strong dependency of these forces on the particle properties allows for size and density depending particle manipulation.
