Description

Melamine-formaldehyde-systems are widely used throughout organic industry due to their huge range of applications. Major advantages are given by their abrasion and scratch resistivity as well as in their UV tolerance. In the presented work 2,4-bis-dimethylamino-6-methylvinylamino-1,3,5-triazin was copolymerized [1] with common monomers like styrene, methyl methacrylate, butyl acrylate and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate by free radical polymerization to form new materials. The obtained species were analyzed with regard to molecular size, melting properties and thermal stabilities for a better insight into the overall characteristics of the materials. Further on, the compositions of the polymers were determined by elemental analyses. Scheme 1: Copolymerization of 2,4-bis-dimethylamino-6-methylvinylamino-1,3,5-triazin with various monomers yielding copolymers that were analyzed by MALDI-ToF/ToF. The obtained characteristics ranged from sticky, highly viscous to solid and quite brittle. The properties of the materials are therefore properly adjustable by the initial composition of the reaction mixture as well as by the utilized comonomer
