Community Engagement or Funding – How does Crowdfunding Contribute to the Market Success of Video Games?

New projects can benefit from crowdfunding as a means of financing without having to give up equity, and in addition during the crowdfunding process a community forms where many people share and discuss the vision of the founder. In this paper we focus on the contribution to the success of both aspects, and analyze all video game projects in Kickstarter, a leading crowdfunding platform, to understand the effect of both factors. Our results indicate community engagement is a stronger precursor for market success and moreover funding amount might even be a negative factor for ratings and evaluations of the released product.
