Boundary Spanning for Open Business Model Innovation of Incumbent Firms

Activity: Talk or presentationContributed talkscience-to-science

Description

Business model innovation can increase the firm’s performance and resilience. Incumbent firms, however, sometimes seem to be reluctant when it comes to engaging in business model innovation due to established routines and inertia to change. A collaboration with external partners, facilitated through boundary spanning teams of the incumbent and the external partner, might support incumbents to overcome these limitations. Little is known about roles and practices boundary spanners follow to ensure a smooth collaboration. Therefore, this research makes first attempts to analyse boundary spanning roles and practices that occur during the initial steps of the joint business model innovation process. A multiple case study approach with companies engaging in business model innovation with external partners shall be conducted. The initial findings (single case study) indicate that for the initial phases of the business model innovation process “feasibility” and “prototyping” boundary spanning occurs in different “spheres” which allowed to develop an initial typology of external, internal and intra-team boundary spanning roles and practices.
