Description

Liquids show spontaneous capillary filling if the total energy of the system is minimized by the filling process. While the evaluation of this is straightforward for closed round microgrooves and leads to Washburn's equation, the treatment of open curved microgrooves is more challenging. Both, the exposed liquid surface and the additional curvature influence the liquid morphology. In this work we introduce a method for the prediction of the occurrence of spontaneous capillary flow by analyzing liquid morphologies inside the microgrooves using Gradient Descent simulations. We show how this method can be applied to winding microgrooves and determine the influence of the liquid front on the capillary filling process.
