A Multiplier-Based PSK-Modulated 0.32-THz Transmitter with Contactless PMF-Feed

Activity: Talk or presentationContributed talkscience-to-science

Description

A 0.32-THz plastic microwave fiber (PMF) link is demonstrated, using a multiply-by-16 frequency multiplier transmitter chip with an on-chip patch antenna, designed using a 130-nm SiGe BiCMOS technology. The low-cost 1-m fiber is made from Polytetrafluoroethylene by milling without further processing. Using the patch antenna with the PMF, contactless coupling was achieved, revealing significantly reduced path losses compared to a similar over-the-air link. Further, using the PMF results in a higher usable bandwidth with reduced in-band loss variations. Finally, a QPSK link with up to 3.25 Gbit/s was demonstrated, using a digitally-predistorted transmitter LO signal.
