Abstract
Red crystals of Na2SnSe3 were synthesized by a fusion reaction of Na2Se, Sn, and Se. Na2SnSe3, oP144, is orthorhombic, space group Pnma, with a=13.975(4)Ä, b=23.680(6)Ä, c=12.519(3)Ä; Z=24. The crystal structure was determined from diffractometer data (AgK alpha)and refined to a conventional R of 0.051 for 2201 reflections with |Fo|?>3sigma(|Fo|?) and 190 refined variables. The crystal structure is characterized by infinite anionic chains, [SnSe3]2-, formed by distorted apex sharing tetrahedra running along [010]. The translation period comprises six tetrahedra. Sn-Se bond lengths are in the range 2.457-2.601Ä with an average of 2.527Ä. Na(+)-ions are arranged on corrugated layers perpendicular to [010]. They are coordinated to 5-6 chalcogen atoms in irregular configurations.
