Access to mathematics for the blind. New technologies in the education of the visually handicapped Colloque INSERM

Publikation: Beitrag in FachzeitschriftArtikel

Abstract

We report on problems resulting from a variety of different proprietary mathematics encoding schemes for the blind. In order to solve the main hurdles a more standardised and open approach based on the LaTeX mathematics package is proposed. LaTeX and three steps for a more suitable solution are discussed: 1) A readable notation should enable blind people to use mathematics sources without losing the power of an adaptable environment. 2)A Computing environment with access to computer algebra systems should provide comfortable tools for calculating. 3) LaTeX should be used as a bridge between different mathematics notations for the blind. The resulting mathematics environment is very flexible and may be easily tailored for different levels of education.
