Projektdetails

Beschreibung

This project focuses on creating tiny, lab-grown tissues that mimic how the spine and joints naturally form in the body. In embryos, structures called somites organize themselves into bones and cartilage, forming the backbone and joints. Inspired by this process, the goal is to use stem cells to recreate these tissues in the lab. Current models can form basic structures but lack blood vessels, proper organization, and the ability to respond to external mechanical forces. This research aims to overcome these challenges through microfabricating proper supporting devices, to develop vascularized (blood vessel-containing) tissues and applying mechanical stimulation to guide their growth into realistic joint-like structures. By studying how cells interact with their surroundings and how blood flow affects development, this project can improve our understanding of joint diseases like arthritis and lead to better treatments and medical technologies.
