What do we already know about managing the sustainable transformation in the electricity sector and what direction should we be heading in? A systematic literature review

Beschreibung

The electricity sector plays a central role in the transformation toward a sustainable society and economy, especially in view of the ecological, social, and economic impact of energy suppliers' actions. As leading actors at the core of the European Union transition agenda, it is in fact expected that electricity suppliers will foster the use of renewable energy sources and make a significant contribution to climate protection by providing clean, affordable and reliable electricity. The central importance of the sector for sustainable development is also reflected in the 2030 Agenda. As a result, expectations for accountability in the sector have risen sharply. Energy suppliers must demonstrate that strategies and business models have been or will be adapted accordingly and that appropriate management control practices are being implemented to drive forward and ensure sustainable transformation.

Sustainable energy, energy transition, and clean energy have also become increasingly important themes in contemporary academic discourse on sustainability management. Several studies have approached these topics from different perspectives. However, reviews that reflect the overall state of knowledge are rather rare. Against this background, this literature review examins two research questions (i) what is known about managing the sustainable transformation in the electricity sector, and (ii) what directions future research can take to driving forward the sustainable transformation of the sector.

A total of 2,041 academic articles were collected searching in Scopus, Web of Science and Ebsco Business Source Premium. 75 articles published between 2001 and 2025 were ultimately selected for inclusion in the final sample.

The review identified five main thematic clusters: a) Strategy direction and governance, b) Transparency and accountability, c) Performance measurements and management, d) Stakeholder engagement, and e) Technology innovation and transformation of business models.

The findings provide insights into a topic that is becoming increasingly important for academics, decision-makers, and regulatory bodies.
