Mapping the Future in Sensemaking-Studies: An Integrative Review

With the advent of global crises like COVID-19, the ever-present threat of climate disasters, as well as the ambiguous impact of emerging technologies on society, understanding how individuals and organizations interact with, and make sense of the future, becomes increasingly important. This systematic literature review investigates the diverse literature on forward-looking sensemaking to better comprehend the role of the future within the sensemaking perspective. It does so through a systematic review methodology that looks to identify and categorize relevant literature from related fields of management to build a comprehensive understanding of the way sense can be made about what has not yet come into existence. We seek to shed light on an intricate nuance of sensemaking that can inform us of when and how we make sense of the future, thereby contributing to the existing body of knowledge in this area of research.
