Circular changes between focus on perfection versus focus on others

We introduce a model of organizational improvisation as a basis for resilient action. It is proposed that improvisation is essentially comprised of circular changes between two behavioral orientations. First, to arrive at a solution state, agents need to focus on task or to the self, which usually includes oriented towards perfection. Second, this is contrasted through orientation towards others in joint improvisation. These opposing orientations are linked through, first, letting go of orientation after the focus on the task and, second, the variation of plans, before a new focus on the task. As a first test of the model, we employ an agent-based simulation, by comparing strictly task-focused agents with agents employing circular behaviour according to the proposed model. Four experiments show consistent performance advantages of circular agents. Limitations of this testing approach are discussed and further studies proposed.
